Corby Maurer - Panhandle High
Why Honored: Maurer led the Panhandle Lady Panthers to the area’s only state championship this year, capturing the Class 2A title with a thrilling 72-70 victory over Refugio. After tying with Refugio last year, Panhandle continued its dominance, winning or tying for the 2A state crown three years in a row under Maurer’s leadership. The Lady Panthers took advantage of Refugio’s misstep at district and surged through the meet, highlighted by 56 points from their three relay teams and a key win in the 300 hurdles by Carly Land. Trailing 70-52 heading into the final event, the 1600 relay, Panhandle pulled off a dramatic comeback by winning the double-point race while Refugio finished seventh, securing the three-peat. Earlier in the postseason, Panhandle cruised to the Region I-2A title with 98 points, nearly doubling runner-up Farwell’s 49. Maurer's leadership has not only produced champions but also fostered a culture of excellence and camaraderie within the Panhandle athletic community. As both the head track coach and defensive coordinator for the football team, Maurer brings a wealth of experience and dedication to his roles.
