The Dick Risenhoover Award honors a person who received national sports recognition during the year. Dick Risenhoover was born in Childress and lived most of his early years at Center, a community east of Childress. Dick played freshman basketball at the University of Texas, then went into the service where he coached and played on the baseball team.
Returning to the University of Texas, he played on the 1950 Longhorn National Championship baseball team. Dick returned to Childress in 1950 to teach and coach and became the head basketball coach in 1954. Under his guidance, Childress won the district basketball championship six of the next seven years.
In 1957, Dick moved to Amarillo and worked at KGNC radio and television, where he became the "Voice of the Gold Sox" and served as color man for Warren Hasse on WTSU football games.
Dick moved to Dallas in 1970 and immediately fell into Super Bowl coverage with the Dallas Cowboys, doing some pre-season Cowboy games and the Texas/Oklahoma TV game one year. Later when the Texas Rangers went to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, he did the TV game the first year, then went on to the network, where he became the "Voice of the Texas Rangers."
In 1974, Dick became the 31st honoree and the first sportscaster installed in the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame. Dick died of cancer on the opening day of the Texas Rangers in 1978.
